As I was looking online at different activist groups on Google I kept going from page to page looking for some good material when I came across gold. There was a fundamentalist Christian web site that mentioned the book of Leviticus as proof that being gay is an abomination. I myself am not gay but it always amuses me to see the christian fundamentalists site single verses in order to prove their own morally superior ideas. Anyone who is familiar with this religious debate is sure to recognize Leviticus 18:22 which states “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”
Great so now that we have the basis I would like to take this discussion a little further. Since we are working with religious logic (in this case christian), Evil is what you don’t like and good is what you do. We can pick and choose verse by verse to prove what we dislike is evil. However, if you are going to be a Bible literalist on this then we should take a look at some other verses and see if we should take them literally, after all the Bible is infallible. So let’s look a little deeper into what Leviticus tells us to do with one from Exodus thrown in for good mesure.
Since I have decided to take a fundamentalist look at things, I followed what Leviticus 1:9 tells us “ He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.” I built a pire in my back yard and went about sacrificing a bull as Leviticus told me. The problem is that while God finds the aroma pleasing, my neighbors got mad and called the authorities. The authorities found my reasoning less than adequate. Should I pray that my neighbors be smited with some frogs or locusts for hindering my God given duty to kill and burn animals?
Since we are being Bible literalists here and taking any possible verse out of context, like most Christians that try to make some retarded point do. Let’s look at Exodus 21:7, it states the following “If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do.” So it is religiously sanctioned that I may sell my daughters into slavery. What would be a good price? I guess that I will have to ask a theologian or priest what the current going price is?
Well, as we all know from the Bible that women are unclean in many different ways but let’s focus on Leviticus 15:19- 24. which state “19 ” ‘When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. 20 Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. 21 Whoever touches her bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 22 Whoever touches anything she sits on must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 23 Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, he will be unclean till evening. 24 If a man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean.” So does this mean that we should institute the good ole fashioned menstrual huts? You know to protect society from these unclean women?
Another issue is how can one tell just on a daily basis if a woman is menstruating? So I guess this means that if you are a Christian you are not allowed to ever shake a woman’s hand. And don’t try to ask before hand, women don’t seem to like being asked that when you first meet and you can pretty well be assured if you do ask you will not get to touch anything.
Leviticus 25:44 states that “44 “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.” Great so to hell with basic human rights as far as the Bible is concerned. Based upon this I think that I want to own a couple of Canadians.
Exodus 35:2 says ” For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.” I know of many people that work on the Sabbath. Should I then go to the local church to inform them of these peoples transgressions against God and let the church dole out the mandated punishment of death, Or should I do my moral duty under the Bible and put them to death myself for trying to make a living.
Leviticus 11:10 states ” But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to detest.” So I guess I need to be species biased and detest all shellfish. Darn I kind of like clam chowder.
Leviticus 21:16-20 states “The LORD said to Moses, 17 “Say to Aaron: ‘For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles.”18 ‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” Therefore according to this no-one with a physical deformity or injury may come under the site of God at his alters. Great so all you christians out there based upon your own book should shun the disabled and not allow them to attend mass. But wait it also says in Leviticus 19:18 ” ‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” I guess that only counts if they are physically fit.
You get the point trying to use the Bible to justify action and bigotry only leads to stupidity and hypocrasy. So for all of you literalists out there you can’t just take one verse litteraly and follow it without doing so for the rest of the book. And lets see how well that goes for you.
