And now another from the “medical oddity” file. This gem comes to us from Islamabad Pakistan where last Tuesday surgeons removed not one but two fetuses from 45 day old baby.
This is a heart warming story from Islamabad Pakistan. In a rare operation, Pakistani doctors removed two fetuses, one of them fully developed, from the abdomen of a 45-day-old baby. The baby girl, whose name is Nazia, was taken to Pakistan’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad by her parents with a swollen abdomen.
Muqqadar Shah who is one of the surgeons who performed the operation on Nazia said, “such cases in medical history are very rare.”
The doctors, after X-ray and ultrasound tests showed two abnormal growths in Nazia’s abdomen, performed surgery to remove them and to the surgeons surprise they discovered a fully-developed fetus that weighed one kg.
Dr. Shah went on to say, “ her mother actually had triplets, but the other two grew in Nazia’s abdomen.”
Nazia, who was on life support at the time that this story was released was reported to be in critical condition.
When I found this story, dated Nov 1, 2009, I had to bring it to you my loyal reader because this is something that you don’t hear of every day. I mean WOW! a baby with two other babies inside it to me that is just amazing. Dr. Shah said that this kind of thing is extremely rare. I found another case from 2006 also from Islamabad where two fetuses were removed from another 2 month old and according to a report in a June 2000 issue of the U.S. journal of Pediatrics called such occurrences rare and estimated their rate at about 1 per 500,000 births.
